What about your history ?

why did I do music ? tha tis basically the only thing I am good at. I never had another job. I was fired at every other job. I was really bad. When I was like 17, I knew I was ready to…I didn’t have enough to say , so I took a long time to come to my point and study music. Not with a school but by myself…read…and learn how to produce…mix…so that’s when I got into music.

• Tu étais bon à l’école ?
You were not good at school ?

Well…I had my moments. I just knew I didn’t like everything that was coming out, and I was living in a small town in Holland so I moved to Berlin and that’s where I started my music.

• A écouter tes sons, on retrouver des influences des années 80 !
It looks like you have influences from the 80s !

No, not so much but I understand why because when you do pop music and you use a lot of synthesizers it is automatically simple and that of course originates that. I never grew up wit that, not at all. But the sounds that I recorded are all from my factory, I have a factory in Berlin where I work. All the communist factories where they used to make the church bells. I decided I wanted to use the real vibes from the rooms there, the real sounds. So I started recording the machines and I’m not the first one who does that but what I wanted to do is try to bring air into my sound. Trying to start from scratch and build something unique. And everything sounds quite big and quite open and for some people it reminds them of the 80s, which is cool for me…but it was not necessarily my intention. It was not my main influence, it was mor the sound of my city, the sound of the instruments and the sound of my factory that I tried to represent.

How was your meeting with Woodkid ?

He came through my booker, who also booked woodkid and he heard my music on the internet and played it to Yohann and Yohann said that it was cool they invited me on his tour and it was simple. So suddenly, I wasn’t playing in filthy dirty clubs anymore or in the morning but I was playing in front of 3000 people at 7 in the night like 7pm, which is really early for me. I am happy, it was cool, a good experience.

When we look at you movies, like Angelene, it seems like you are influenced by cinema. What are your favorite directors?

Bela Tarr is a big one, it’s a sort of contemporary “noir”. What happens in “noir” is that the city becomes a character on its own, so you would have two main characters, where one character represents the city. This is really important in my music. What we tried to do for Angelene is make a modern Tarr. You know when you write a song and it turns out exactly how you want it to be? That is what happened. For me, anything that is what inspired me. I am really proud of this song, one of the few one’s I am happy with.

• Quels sont tes films préférés ?
Can you tell me about your favorite movies ?

Damnation by Bela Tarr is one of them. I mean I can go on forever. When people tell you too many references you aren’t going to look them up, but he is very very good. If I am lucky, two people are going to Google his name.

When some says I love “this this and this”, you it’s only one !

Exactement.

Yeah, exactly. It is not that I watch only one movie or one director but it is important.

I heard that you prepared a new album. Can you give me some tracks or tell me about the titles?

It is quite secret. But I can give you the name of my label Hylas Records. What I tried to do is that every song represents a form of change: the transformation of relationships….the only thing that we know is that things are going to change. Everything changes. That is the only thing we know we are sure about, stuff are changing all the time. What it is about is how we are trying to deal with this, trying to learn how to accept it has affects us, and for al lot of people it is really hard because we like it when everything stays the same. And that is what I lived through when I did this record. From a 19 year old boy to a young adult is a very particular moment of change. And it is omething I attach to the city of Berlin, which is undergoing changes all the time: new buildings, new buildings, new buildings. The whole city was bombed, so it about everything. It is a concept I saw all my life, the idea of change. It is one of the main references in my music.

• Qui est ton artiste favori ?
Who is your favorite artist ?

I love Roy Orbison. It is very unusual.

• Ta marque de pompe préférée ?
You favorite shoe brand ?

Aucune idée. Je ne suis pas dans ce trip.

I have no idea. I am not into this kind of thing.

• Quel est ton meilleur souvenir d’artiste ? Ton meilleur concert ?
Your best artist memory? Best concert ?

One of the coolest moments was when I played The Cure track, “A forest”. It’s a track that is just revolutionary. I played it with The Shoes here, at La Cigale. It was sold out an I played that one song and nobody knows me but it was for me an important moment. Coolest moment of last year.

• Quel est le pire ratage  ?
What is your worst failure?

I had one fucking moment in Amsterdam; we played a gig and during the concert a guy died. But I was kind of funny because we played and in the middle of it, the sound turned off but I was still singing. And I was totally into it…and the guy just died. He overdosed. I don’t know what the fuck he was taking. So I went back stage and there were ambulances and the guy was taking away.

• Es-tu open minded ?

• Are you really open minded ?

Tout dépend. J’aimerai bien savoir à propose de quoi ? C’est une question très ouverte. Mais oui, je suis open minded.

It depends on what. I would love to know what though ? It is all embracing the question. But yeah, I am open minded.
