On a rencontré VV Brown à l’occasion de la sortie de son deuxième album Samson and Delilah

Peux-tu nous parler de ta carrière ?
Can you tell us about your carreer ?

I started singing when i was about 5, i was raised in church and i was surrounded by lots of gospel music an then when i was 15 i joined a punk band and by the age of 18 i got signed on my first record and it’s been quite a long journey up to this point, I released my album in 2009 called travelling like the lights which was my first album. Then i went on to make a second album in Los Angeles which i decided i didnt want to do and decided to move away from my major label and start my own record company called YOY Records and then I created and released Samson and Delilah which is the album that’s out now.

So, it’s been 5 years since your first album, what did you do all these years ? Where were you ?

I was on tour, we were touring Europe for about 2 years and also America so even if it’s seem like I was away, i was still on the road singing. And I started an online clothing store called VV Vintage which believe in sustainability and ethical fashion so I did that for a year and then after  I went back into the studio to work on my second album Samson and Delilah so there’re so much things that have happened, so many changes. I was kind of  doing a lot of things in so many different places. I’m enjoying making my second album, you know, being in the studio, at home.

And what are your new influences on this album because there’re a lot of differencies from your first album ?

So the first album was very much influenced by 50’s music and pop music but after I finished touring, I had learned so much new things, soaked up lots of different kinds of culture and was inspired by different art forms. I think Björk was a huge influence on me changing, I think also just growing up. I’m becomming a woman and knowing yourself more… I love The Knife as well, inspiration are from the up and coming artists, i’m watching them work and grow. My family and boyfriend are inspiration too. Huge influencies and rapid transformation are going on in my life – That’s why we can hear different sounds in your new album -. Yeah and sometimes life changes and you have to kinda go with it. I could’ve made an album that was very similar to the first record but I really really wanted to follow my convictions and be the person I really am, I didn’t want to have to fake it and I think if I made a second album like the first one it wouldn’t have been representing of who I am as a person so I had to be honest about it.

Dis nous pourquoi tu as appelé ton album Samson et Delilah ?
So tell us why you called your album Samson and Delilah ?

I called my new album Samson and Delilah basically because I love the story : it’s about a man who loses all his strength and gains it back again and I felt really empowered when I made this record. When I started my own record company, I was really nervous and it was propably the scariest time of my life but I felt very empowered. I felt weak but at the same time, when we finished the album, I felt strong again – So you identify yourself with the story ? – Yeah, I identify myself with the process of Samson’s losing his strength and then gaining it back again and the idea of vulnerability and… It’s just a really powerful story

Pourquoi avoir choisi de chanter à la Flèche d’Or ?
Why did you choose La Flèche D’Or to perform there ?

Well, I think it’s known for alternative music and I think it’s really important that the venues that you choose reflect the artist that you are. That’s something that I’ve learned when I was on tour, i really want the venues to reflect the music that I play, and great bands played at La Flèche d’Or so that’s also why we choose this place.

A question that has no link with your music but we want to know what’s your favorite brand of clothing and if you like sneakers ?

My favorite brand is Issey Miyake, a japonese designer and I love sneakers. I love…Hm, I can’t remember the name of them, it’s a british brand… They’re called Chone or Shone (so we didnt identify the name of this brand… If you have an idea, don’t hesitate !) I can’t remember but that’s the best I usually wear in London and if I had to pick a second one it would be Reebok, I do like Reebok. I’m a huge fan of the High Tops – Do you like Nike also ?  Yeah Nike or Reebok, I like them both. I like any kind of high top trainer. I love the new trainer with some kind of plateform you see, like straight plateform. I really love those, especially when they’re all white.

What would be your dream collaboration ?

– Hm, j’aime bien The Knife, Kate Bush, Grace Jones… Il y en a tellement !

It would be with Björk. She is an incredible artist and i really really like and admire what she’s done in her career, her music and her creativity. She litteraly creates her own universe and I want to be able to create my own universe – and which artist you like the most besides Björk ?  Hm, I like The Knife, Kate Bush, Grace Jones… but there’s lots of them, so many !

What can we wish you for the future ?

Well, my dream would be to consistantly keep touring, making albums. I’d love to make a film, a documentary – you would produce it ?- Yeah, I love producing, we made a short film for the album and I was the producer and director on that and I really liked it, I like being behind the scene. And yeah on top of that i’d like to get settled, have kids and get married one day ! I like the idea of that and we talked about having our own universe and I think having your own family is a good beginning to that, it would be the most amazing cherry on the cake to all that

Et dernière question, are you really Open Minded ?
And, last but not least are you really Open Minded ?

I think I’m open minded, yeah ! I try to be. I think there’s always an explanation or a reason behind something. I think it’s always important to keep learning about people and things. I think it’s important to be open minded, if you’re close minded then, you know there’s no room to grow or change or understand or reflect – And you travel all around the world so you kinda have to be open minded someway – Exactly, I think travelling really helps you to be that way, you learn from different cultures, you can adapt. It’s crazy, cultures are such interesting things because some things in some countries may seem disrespectful and in an other it is just normal. So yeah, I try to be open minded.
